Car Line Tips for Distanced Drop Off

Car Line Tips

We take a moment during drop-off and pick-up to verify that your student has been screened and is signed in/signed out before they enter/leave the building. This extra step is necessary to insure that all students are fully-screened and that our attendance data is correct each day. Here are some tips that you may find helpful.

  • Show the Success Screen - Our devices may take a few moments to reload and display after students are signed in/out. Parents are encouraged to show us the Success Screen on their phones after signing in each student if they would rather not wait for our devices to catch up.

  • Bookmark the Distance Drop-Off Page - Instead of using the QR code each visit, you can save the Distance Drop Off page to your iPhone Home Screen, add it to your Favorites, or Bookmark it for slightly faster access. If you need help, email Cat (library@memphismontessori.org). Be sure to mention which type of phone you use.

  • Prefill the Screening Questions - Answer the screening questions up to the temperature check while waiting in line when your car is not moving. You must wait to select Pass for temp check, though.

  • Prefill Pick-Up - Once you are in the car line for dismissal, you can go ahead and sign out your student for pick-up. Remember to show us your screen as your student enters the car. To avoid confusion, do not sign out your student before you reach the parking lot.

  • Multiple Children, Multiple Windows - Try opening multiple windows, pages, or tabs simultaneously to prefill the questions for your students. Some of our parents of multiple children find it helpful to open a separate tab for each child and answer the screening questions while waiting in line.

Most of these tips came from MMS parents. If you have any other tips to share, email Cat (library@memphismontessori.org).

Historical Halloween General Guidelines (2020-2021)

Midtown Montessori Historical Halloween 2020-21

Ancient Myths & Monsters

 Costume Ideas & Guidelines

IMPORTANT COVID-19 Adjustments: To maintain social distancing measures, we will be conducting Historical Halloween OUTSIDE. While we have historically had this event as a community, we will be conducting primary and elementary presentations separately this year in order to limit the number of people at the event. If you have a child in both environments, you may attend both. Please check your newsletter/calendar for the exact times as the date approaches.

This is a general guideline for the event. Your child’s teacher will be contacting you with information specific to their class.

Aim/Purpose of Historical Halloween: To give children an opportunity to engage in a celebration of Halloween at school that is in keeping with our culture of exploration and learning. Midtown Montessori asks children to dress up as a historical/cultural figures in keeping with the selected theme each year. This year, with “Myths & Monsters”, the children will explore legends and stories produced by various cultures as a means of exploring the creativity of human beings in the past who sought to answer “the big questions” they had about our universe.

Historical Halloween Q& A

May parents visit the school during Historical Halloween? YES! Historical Halloween is a community event. The primary children will do a short “parade of costumes” followed by a brief presentation where they say who they are. The elementary children present a Living Wax Museum. Please check your newsletter for the timings appropriate to your child’s class.

Can my child be just ANY mythical creature or monster? In addition to fitting within the theme, costumes chosen by the children should demonstrate a clear link to a history, culture, geographical location, and specific legend from the past. For example, if a child chooses to be a unicorn or dragon, it should be a specific unicorn or dragon from specific story from a geographical location or world culture. All choices must be presented to your child’s teacher prior to the event.

What are the guidelines for costumes? Primary children should not bring props with their costumes. Elementary children may do so as part of their presentation, but these items will be stored in the office until it is time to present. We strongly discourage weapons as props for the elementary unless it is an integral part of their costume. If a child has selected a “monster” from this theme, the costume should not be scary or violent. Remember that the ultimate purpose here is to TEACH others something new!

My child is really into something that is not in this theme. May they dress up in that costume instead? Please adhere to the theme. It is important to our sense of community that each member recognizes the responsibilities associated with the freedom to participate in events. The theme matters – we change the theme every year, so your child will get an opportunity to dress like people from all sorts of fields.

My child has chosen a legend/figure from a different race or culture. Is that okay? Yes, since this is an educational event in which an actual person is being researched or acknowledged for their contribution, it is okay. However, that doesn’t mean that great care should not be taken in selecting pieces for costumes. When dressing up as a member of another race or culture, please maintain the following guidelines:

NEVER make alterations to skin color or physical attributes in an effort to have your costume “look more like” someone from another race

Avoid costuming that represents cultural signifiers to the majority, but do not accurately reflect the culture or the historical figure’s actual practice. Your child should wear the kind of clothes that the individual was/is reported to wear. For example, not all Native Americans wear feathers, not all Indian women wear saris and not all Japanese wear kimono. This doesn’t just apply to clothes, but also hair and jewelry.

• If you have any doubts about whether something is appropriative or demeaning, ask your child’s teacher BEFORE the event.

Some Ideas

For ideas about costumes, you can look at books or resources that cover ancient myths. This year’s theme has a wide variety of possibilities! Suggested Internet search terms: ancient myths, ancient legends, ancient creatures, mythological figures

Examples:

  • Iris, ancient Greek Goddess

  • Banba, Celtic goddess

  • Satyr, Greek creature

  • Kongamato, Creature from Zambian tradition

  • Kaku Anansi, West African trickster god

  • Wakinyan (Thunderbird) Dakota legend

  • Manabohzo (Rabbit Trickster), Algonquin legend

  • Shangti, Chinese god of justice

  • Yinglong, Chinese dragon spirit of rain and water

Playground Use Outside of School Hours (2020-2021)

A few families have been in touch with questions regarding our position on the use of the playground when school is not in session. Although we cannot enforce a prohibition, we strongly discourage the use of the playground equipment outside of school hours. As detailed on page 19 of the COVID-19 Addendum to the Parent Guide, we strongly caution against contact outside of school, which "may potentially inhibit our ability to trace illness internally and could lead to unnecessary school wide shutdowns." MMS also asks “families to exercise great caution with respect to their children socializing and coming into contact with individuals who are not part of the Midtown Montessori Community.”

Avoiding the playground will mitigate a number of related concerns, including:

  • Cohort Mixing - During the school day we take great care to keep the elementary students and the primary students in separate environments, including lunch and recess periods.

  • Sanitization Concerns -  During the school day, Midtown Montessori School staff members sanitize all of the playground equipment before each scheduled use. Outside of our planned daily use of the playground, we cannot control who has been in contact with the equipment.

  • Outside Playground Visitors - The playground belongs to Trinity United Methodist Church and is used by a variety of neighborhood children outside of our school hours. We have observed that not all visitors to the playground observe physical distancing and mask-wearing protocols.

An alternative to consider is using the grassy area between the parking lot and Evergreen Avenue for free play before or after school. The students also enjoy playing in this area.

Note: Current sign-ups are always available from the MMS Newsletter.

Families at Midtown Montessori School are required to earn community hours during the school year by contributing to the betterment of the school. It is recommended that you plan to earn around half of the hours or more during the first semester in order to avoid running out of time to complete the required amount of hours near the end of the school year. Please note that there is a ten hour limit on possible hours earned per event/donated item.

Any outstanding hours will be billed at a rate of $15/hour at the end of the school year.

Opportunities to Earn Community Hours

Be sure to check the MMS Newsletter each week for new opportunities to earn community hours as well as links to ongoing sign ups such as the ones listed below. Other family members such as grandparents, aunts, uncles, and family friends are welcome to contribute community hours on behalf of your student, as well.

  • Parent Education Events - Includes certain meetings and events like Silent Journey. NOTE: Each family member can earn hours at the same time when attending events. (Hours vary depending on event.)

  • Volunteer On-Site - Sign-up to help out on-site with tasks such as dusting, paper cutting, laminating, data entry, shelving books, etc.

  • Laundry / Mat Washing / Flowers - You can volunteer for any classroom's laundry, etc. Volunteer through Sign Up Genius links included in weekly newsletters.

  • Pet Food: Drop off veggies for the pets (1 hour.)

  • Other: Additional opportunities arise throughout the school year. Families are informed of these events through email and the newsletter.

Keeping Track of Hours

MMS Library will usually include a link to a document listing each family’s current hours count. A few times throughout the school year, Cat will email each family a detailed Community Hours Report. Families will also receive updates and reminders a few times throughout the year regarding the number of hours that have been recorded for their family. You’re always welcome to email Cat to inquire about your family’s community hours.

If you have any questions or concerns about earning community hours or would like to know your family’s current total, email Cat.
